On Friday, December 6, 2019, Chester Francis Cyga, loving husband and father of 4, passed away peacefully at age 91. Chester was born August 4, 1928, in Quecreek. He attended Harrison School, served in the Army in the 101 st Airborne and worked as a coal miner until his retirement. He also spent some years as a semi-pro baseball player. He was an active member of the Sipesville Fire Department for many years and did volunteer work throughout the local community. He married Joan Welsh on September 22, 1947 and they raised 4 children. Chester enjoyed being active and took pride in keeping up his well-tended yard and garden. He was a skilled woodworker and talented cartoonist, delighting his family with his drawings. He was a self-taught musician who played the harmonica and accordion, often serenading the family and his dog, who loved “singing” along. He also enjoyed playing a small acting role in the movie the PA Miners Story, based on the nearby Quecreek mining rescue. Chester’s mischievous sense of humor and love of a good prank was a highlight of his personality and kept friends and family on their toes. Chester enjoyed cheering on the Steelers and Pirates. He loved spending time with his pets, especially his beloved dog Dillon, who was his close companion in recent years. Most of all, Chester loved and cherished his family and his beloved wife Joan, with whom he shared 72 years of love, laughter and adventures. He will be greatly missed.
