Obituary

Charles Michael “Mike” Miller of Boswell, PA passed peacefully from this life at his home on June 26, 2023. Born in Somerset on October 4, 1951. Mike was the son of Charles A. and Dolores R. (Shaulis) Miller.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Mary Ann (Cerilli) Miller who passed in 2006.  He is survived by his daughter Emilee (Miller) Vinisky and husband Brady, and his only sibling, brother Steven L. Miller.  Mike graduated from Somerset High School, class of 1969.  He was Honorably discharged from the US Army in 1974 after serving on a Nike missile launch crew. After his military service, he worked in the construction trade until 1987 when he became paraplegic.  He was determined to walk and trained himself to do so with the use of canes. Once back on his feet, Mike went to work for New Enterprise Stone and Lime at their Bakersville quarry and remained a reliable employee there until the time of his passing.  After the untimely death of his wife, Mike devoted himself to mentoring, caring for, and raising their daughter.  Among the many things they accomplished together was her participation in the Junior Olympics National Rifle Championship, an academic scholarship to college, and the beginning of her career as an educator. Despite his physical limitations, Mike was an avid hunter of” white-tails” and could often be found in the woods felling trees, splitting firewood, baiting his brother into arguments about politics.  He was a member of the American Legion Post 181, Eagles Aerie 1801, Jenner Rod and gun club, Greater Ferndale Sportsman’s Club, Bridgeport Sportsman’s Club, Jerome Club, Geiger Shooting Club, New Baltimore Sportsman’s Club, and he was an active supporter of the Shanksville Rifle Team.  He will be remembered for his tenacity in the face of what at times seemed to be a constant stream of adversity. His strong will and his absolute determination to live independently in spite of those adversities.  In accordance with Mike’s desire, there will be no viewing.  The family will be having a small graveside service. Those wishing to do so are invited to make donations in Mike’s name to any of the organizations mentioned above or the local charity of their choice. Arrangements under the direction of the ROBERT H HALVERSON FUNERAL HOME. Condolences may be made at www.halversonfuneralhome.com
