Doris Jean Gates

Doris Jean (Yost) Gates 87, of Somerset, died October 4, 2024. Born August 8, 1937, in Jenner Twp., she is the daughter of the late Edna (Lape) Roddy and stepfather John Roddy. Also preceded in death by her husband Raymond Bud Gates and brother-in-law Edward Maurer. Survived by son Robert McCulley and wife Rhonda, sister Betty (Yost) , nephews John Maurer and wife Pam, and Bill Maurer and wife Dee. Step grandchildren Jon Gates and Katilyn Gates and dozens of cousins. Doris was a graduate of JBJ High School class of 1955 where she was a member of the school band and later the Somerset Community Band. She served in the Marine Corps as an accountant, played basketball and was the east coast champions. She received a degree in accounting from Cambria Rowe Business College and was an avid golfer and volunteered to help with Arnold Palmer tournaments where she met a lot of PGA players including Arnold Palmer. She was a member of Zion Hoffman Lutheran Church and served on many committees and the kitchen crew. Friends will be received from 2-4 & 6-8 Tuesday in the Robert H. Halverson Funeral Home where services will be held at 11 am Wednesday with P.J. O’Neill officiating. Interment in Somerset County Memorial Park.  In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Zion Hoffman Lutheran Church, PO Box 177, Acosta, PA 15520.  Military rites by the Somerset County Honor Guard.
