Edward "Ed" Schellhammer Obituary

EDWARD R. (“Ed”) SCHELLMAMMER, 95, of Somerset, PA, formerly of Johnstown, PA died June 21, 2025.  Ed was born In Johnstown on December 8, 1929.  He was the son of Charles J. Schellhammer and Geraldine C. (Glass) Schellhammer.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth “Betty” Schellhammer on February 3, 2011.  He is survived his daughter, Mary E. Schellhammer, Esq. and her husband, George B. Kaufman, Esq. of Somerset.  He was also preceded in death by his sisters, Helen C. Dawson, Betty Lou Kopach, Dorothy Schellhammer and his brothers, Kenneth C. Schellhammer, Donald E. Schellhammer and Charles T. Schellhammer.  He is survived by numerous nephews and nieces.  Although he was blinded in an accident at the age of 12, he refused to accept blindness as an obstacle.  He attended and graduated from the Western Pennsylvania School for the Blind in 1950.  He furthered his education at Duquesne University graduating with a bachelor’s degree in history in 1954.  He attended the University of Pittsburgh School of Law where he was a member of the Order of the Coif and graduated second in his class in 1957.  He returned to Johnstown where he established a private practice of law in 1958.  In 1967 Ed was appointed the Executive Director of Southern Alleghenies Legal Aid serving Cambria, Somerset and Bedford Counties, a position he held until his retirement in 1995.  At the time of his death, he was the oldest member of the Cambria County Bar Association.  Ed was elected to Johnstown City Council where he served from 1960 to 1964.  He was an original incorporator of Goodwill Industries of the Conemaugh Valley and served on its board of directors for over 40 years.  He served on the board of directors of United Cerebral Palsy for over 30 years.  Additionally, he served on the board of directors of the Cambria County Association for the Blind and Handicapped for many years.  He was a faithful member of St. John Gaulbert Cathedral in Johnstown, the Johnstown and Richland Lions Club and the Pennsylvania Sportsman’s Association.  Ed enjoyed playing pinochle, following the Steelers, Pirates, Penguins, Pitt and Penn State on the radio, often with a transistor radio on each shoulder. Funeral services have been arranged by Halverson Funeral Home in Somerset.  A Mass and Christian Burial will be held at St. John Gaulbert Cathedral, 117 Clinton Street, Johnstown, Pennsylvania on Saturday June 28, 2025 at 10:00 a.m. with family and friends being received from 9:00 a.m. to time of service. His family expresses their gratitude to Cris, Leyna and Tina for their care in Ed’s final years along with the hospice and home health nurses and aides who assisted with his care.
