Rowena Nadine (Johnson) Walker, 100 yrs, Somerset, died January 6, 2026, at home. Born in 1925, in Chanute, KS., she was the daughter of Christian parents, Warren Warmon and Bessie May (Young) Johnson of Chanute.
Rowena married Robert G. Walker of Somerset in 1949, her devoted husband of 51 years. He proceeded her in death in 2001.
Also proceeding her in death are her parents; six sisters: Lois Stevenson, Eula Toon, Naomi Tasche, all from Chanute; Beatrice Johnson (baby), Earlton, KS; Barbara Ann Dunkle, Asuza, CA; Ruth Martin, La Mesa, CA; and three brothers: Enos, Idaho Falls, ID; Samuel, Chanute, KS; Russell, Kimberly, ID.
Rowena “Ronnie” is survived by two children: Mrs. Charles A. (Susan) Cober of Bernville, PA; Mrs. Michael (Nancy) Morrison of Somerset; three grandchildren: Eric and David Cober, and Jeanne Merringer; one great-grandchild, Ben Cober; and five step-grandchildren: Paul, Adam, Kim, and Scot Morrison, and Amy McLarand. She is also survived by many truly wonderful nieces and nephews, and grand-nieces and nephews.
Among Rowena’s passions were studying the Bible and memorizing verses, teaching elementary school children, and musical activities. After graduating from Chanute High School, Rowena attended Kentucky Christian College in Grayson, KY, graduating in 1946, completing the Junior College Course of Study. She moved to Somerset with several of her college peers, married, and later continued her education at California State College, California, PA, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Education. She taught 4th and 5th grades at Maple Ridge Elementary School in Somerset for 22 years, loving every minute. She was an active, pillar member of the First Christian Church, Somerset, for 50 years as a Sunday school teacher, assistant to the church secretary, and active in the choir. She also enjoyed singing in a trio with Mildred Will and Elsie Weimer; and enjoyed Music Club.
Rowena will be very missed by her family and friends.
Friends received at 10 to 11 AM, Saturday, January 10, at Robert H. Halverson Funeral Home, Somerset, PA, where a service will immediately follow at 11 AM, Pastor Lee Seese, Spiritual Care Coordinator, Heartland Hospice, officiating.
