Sylvia J. Horner

Sylvia J. (Weyand) Horner 80 of New New Carlisle, IN, formerly of Somerset, PA passed away peacefully on January 4, 2021, at Hamilton Grove Assisted Care Facility in New Carlisle, IN, where she was called from this vale of tears to the nearer presence of our Lord Jesus. Born March 10, 1940, in Somerset, PA, to the late Adolph G. and Emily C. (Cook) Weyand Sr. She married Charles B. Horner, Sr, in 1963 and they spent 53 years together, until Charles’ death in January 2017. Sylvia is survived by her three children: Charles (Karin) Horner, Jr., Lucille (James) Feeney, and William (Barbara) Horner and one sister, Peggie (Weyand) Jackson of Fayetteville, NC. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Charles, grandson Samuel Horner (son of William and Barbara Horner) and brothers, Adolph Jr. and William Weyand. Sylvia attended school in Somerset and graduated from Somerset High School in the class of 1958. She began working at the J.J. Newberry Company in downtown Somerset, which later became the Mc Crory’s Store. Rising from the ranks as a cashier to Assistant Store Manager and then to Store Manager in three locations; Cresson, PA, Elkhart, IN and Scottdale, PA. Sylvia had 30 years of dedicated service to the Mc Crory  Corporation before the company went out of business. In addition to being a wife and mother, Sylvia had an extensive garden which the family used for canning and freezing. She was an avid reader and enjoyed seeing “the sites” as the family traveled. Her interest in photography was evident by the many snapshots she took of those trips and events. Sylvia’s family offers its heartfelt thanks to the staff at Hamilton Grove for their care during the seven years she was a resident at Hamilton Grove and to the Heartland Hospice, Mishawaka, IN, for their compassion and comfort during her final days. Visitation will be held at Christ Casebeer Lutheran Church, Somerset, PA, on Saturday January 9, 2021, from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm, funeral services will begin at 12:30 pm and private family interment at the Christ Casebeer Church Cemetery will be immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, preferred memorials may be made to the Christ Casebeer Lutheran Church, 10377 Somerset Pike, Somerset, PA 15501 or to Heartland Hospice, 230 W.
