Violet Leona Burkett, a faithful follower of Christ, entered peacefully into the Lord’s presence on April 4, 2025. She was in her home, surrounded by loved ones. Violet was born on March 31, 1927, to the late Freeman and Dorothea Handwerk. She grew up in Kingwood, Pennsylvania. In addition to her parents, she is predeceased by siblings Edna Miller, Ada Lyons, and Walter Handwerk. Violet fulfilled the roles of devoted wife and mother with love and dedication. She leaves behind her beloved husband of 72 years, Ward Burkett, as well as cherished daughter Eunice (Lee) Gilreath of Sedona, Arizona. Violet is also survived by Matthew (Jillian) Costea, whom she embraced and loved as family. Violet was fond of her humble beginnings, often recounting stories of younger days spent working in a chicken processing plant or stretching a dollar during the years Ward served his country overseas. She went on to labor beside her husband as they established and built Ward Burkett Bit Service. Violet was a member of First Christian Church in Somerset. Christ was a constant in all situations. Her courage, grace, and unwavering faith were evident to all who knew her. The ministerial staff and the congregation at the church were a source of comfort for over six decades. Additionally, many thanks to UPMC Hospice and a dedicated team of companions and caregivers who supported Ward and Violet with compassion. Violet’s generosity, quick wit, and determination left indelible marks on the hearts of the people she encountered. Her memory will continue to serve as an inspiration to those who remain. At the request of the family, funeral arrangements will be private. Memorial contributions in Violet’s name can be made to the youth fund at First Christian Church: 139 East Main Street, Somerset. Arrangements under the direction of the Robert H. Halverson Funeral Home.
